Learning The ABC’s Of Golf

Golf is a wonderful sport. Over the last several years it had become more popular than ever. But did you know that golf is also an ancient game? It is. In fact, the game itself is well over three hundred years old. Its long and colorful history may be one reason it is so popular. Another reason may be that it is simply fun to play.

While it is true that a person who has never played golf before can go out and buy a set of a golf clubs and some balls and begin hitting them in order to learn the game, it is a much better idea to learn from someone who already knows the game. In many cases, the best and most affordable tutor is a family member or friend. For those who can afford the cost, the best choice for a golf teacher is a local pro who usually works out of the golf course office or pro shop.

When it comes to buying golf clubs you have two basic choices. You can buy new golf clubs or you can buy used golf clubs. Many people believe that new clubs cost a fortune. Well, that can be true but it does not have to be true. You can often find very good golf clubs at very good prices at your local Wal-Mart, Target, or other department store.

You can also shop for golf clubs online. There are literally hundreds of golf club outlets available in the Internet and many offer good bargains when you buy more than one club. Lastly, you can buy used clubs. Usually, this is fine, but inspect the clubs carefully before you take them. Check all parts of the clubs and make sure they feel good in your hands. It is almost a given that you will have to replace the grips so do not let that be the only thing that stops you from buying a set of used golf clubs that you otherwise like.

In many cases, when you buy a set of clubs the set does not come with a putter. Although the putter is considered the smallest club in your bag, it is without doubt one of the most important clubs that you will use. For this reason, it is especially important that you find a putter that feels good to you. The only way to know this is to take one out of the rack and do some practice putting swings with it. You will never be a good putter if the face of the putter does not stay square with the ball. If the heel or the toe of the putter that you are trying out feels off balance, try another one.

As a new golfer you will need to have golf balls. If you have already spent some time hitting balls and can keep them straight then buy whatever balls you like. However, if you are new and have yet to perfect your swing, I suggest you buy the lower priced balls for now. These balls are fine for average play and when you lose one (or more) and you will lose one (or more) you will not be as upset. Another good option for golf balls is to buy used balls. These, too, are fine for average play and cost much less than new ones.

Golf is not a sport that can be mastered overnight. In fact, it can take a lifetime to master it. As you become proficient in some areas, you will want to move forward and learn even more skills, and it is this constant learning curve that makes golf so challenging and exciting.
